What is 24d-studio.
24d-studio is a multidisciplinary design practice founded in 2008 by Fumio Hirakawa and Marina Topunova. Our works range in scale from architecture, interiors, installations, lighting and furniture design with a strong implementation of nature-oriented design and digital craftsmanship. Our designs integrate multiple perspectives through interdisciplinary collaborations leading to exciting and innovative applications for clients and end-users. We believe in hands-on approach in design process to understand problems in multiple scales and test ideas immediately.
Our Mission.
24d-studio currently operates in Kobe City of Kansai area, Japan. Kobe is a picturesque city edged between mountains and the ocean. Our partnership with nature have established gradually and naturally by us cordially accepting our present surroundings and transcribing our awe of nature into our design works. In our studio, we investigate many means to bring nature into our daily life and thus we operate under the theme of “Living with Nature”. Our design process implements a strong connection between digital and analog methodology, and haptic experience that enriches our lives.

24d-studio Profile
Fumio M. Hirakawa
Fumio Hirakawa is from Kobe, Japan. Fumio has graduated with Interior Design Degree at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and Postgraduate Studies in Architecture at Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, USA.
At 24d-studio, Fumio believes in comprehensive communication and extended research as must do steps prior to design. He believes that every project has unique elements of various scales and categories and an opportunity to reflect on socio-cultural issues. He enjoys exploring virtual and technological ideas in realms of digital and physical through multiple study models and prototypes.
Fumio currently teaches architectural design, focusing on computational design and digital fabrication at Kyoto Seika University Department of Architecture. He also has taught a design studio at Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies and served as a Visiting Lecturer at Kyoto University, Fashion Institute of Technology, S.U.N.Y., Pratt Institute, and New York Institute of Technology.
Marina Topunova
Marina Topunova was born in Moscow, Russia and graduated in Architecture at Universitiy of Illinois at Chicago and Postgraduate studies at Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles, and is a registered architect in NY, USA.
At 24d-studio, Marina believes in pursuit of innovation through exploration of building techniques, formal complexities, and new materials. She believes in the discovery of various degrees of playfulness across design problems. She enjoys solving the riddles of how to create the outmost effect with sometimes limited funds. Similar to Fumio, she believes in employing all techniques from virtual to physical in exploration of every project's design.
